The Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries are the culprits behind this whisky, both owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. Yoichi was founded in 1934, when Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, found the ideal spot for a distillery: conditions as close as possible to the Scotland where he studied the craft.

Nikka From The Barrel is a blend that has collected multiple awards at fairs and competitions around the world. It's bottled at 51.4% alcohol, so it's nearly at cask strength. Official age statements aren't published, but the rumor is there are whiskies between 8 and 10 years old inside. A big combination of casks and different whiskies gives this one a genuinely interesting, high-quality character.

On the nose: rich wood, fresh flowers, vanilla. A quiet nose overall, so don't panic if it seems shy at first.

On the palate: oily, tropical fruit, caramel, ginger.

The finish: long, warm, slightly dry, with bitter chocolate and light smoke.

Fair questions

+Is Nikka From The Barrel too strong for a beginner?

It's stronger than most (51.4% versus the usual 40%), but that's not a reason to skip it. Add a drop or two of water and it opens up beautifully. Just sip slower than usual.

+Why is the bottle so small?

The standard bottle is 500 ml, not the usual 700 ml, in a squat little pharmacy-style flask. Factor that in when comparing prices; you're paying for concentration, not volume.

+Is it really Japanese whisky?

Mostly. It's designed, blended, and aged in Japan by Nikka, but part of the liquid comes from Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland, which Nikka owns. Japanese rules on labeling used to be famously relaxed about this.
